Bowel Cancer Screening and Colon Cancer Screening Save Lives

Bowel cancer screening and cancer of the bowel screening saves lives. If noticed in its earliest stage, cancer of the colon is totally curable and if noted at stage I, it's 93% curable. If left to its own devices, abnormal tissue growth can spread across the body. Bowel cancer, including cancer of the bowel, rectal cancer, appendix cancer, anal cancer and small intestines cancer are responsible for 655,000 deaths annually. Just about 50% of Americans over age 50 haven't had this life-saving colonoscopy done.

One of the primary things doctors look for in a bowel cancer screening is the presence of colon polyps. A polyp is a surprising expansion on the surface of the bowel, also called the large intestine. Some polyps appear bulbous, yellow and round, while others are red and yellow and recessed into the wall like a scab. Customarily, these polyps are non-cancerous and benign, but sometimes they turn into cancer. As a precautionary method, pathologists will remove and examine these growths for evidence of metastatic colon cancer.

There are a few differing kinds of bowel cancer screening a doctor may perform to look for polyps. With a barium enema, the doctor will rectally administer the barium liquid before taking x-rays of the big intestine. In a sigmoidoscopy, the doctor will insert a thin, flexible tube with a light attached into the lower colon to view the last third of the big intestine. To look deeper, the doctor may counsel a colonoscopy procedure, which is equivalent to the sigmoidoscopy but permits the doctor to see further into the entire huge intestine and remove any polyps she or he finds. During a computerized tomography ( CT ) scan, the doctor will insert a flexible tube into the patient's anus and take x-rays using a computer. A stool sample test may also show telltale indicators of cancer, while it's not as effective as the other types of screening methods.

Many people dread the idea of bowel cancer screening usually because, well, it involves a thin tube up the rear! Regardless of the unpleasant idea of it, the actual procedure is painless because patients are sedated. According to Steven Frank, an anesthesiologist at the greater Baltimore Medical Center, patients have two options : to be consciously sedated, where they can reply to commands but remember small else, or to be deeply sedated, which knocks them out totally. People who have had a colonoscopy in the past still generally come to dread the bowel-cleansing ritual and colonoscopy prep more than the process itself. There's no easy way to get around this, though, so it's best to follow the protocol and avoid needing to come in a second time to get accurate results!
